Diverse learners
In the classroom that I am working in right now I have experienced working with many diverse learners. We have one very advanced student who can read words like "bucket filler” at the age of 5. We also have 4 ELL students who all have different levels of English.
We have one student who we thought speaks no English. We later discovered through a parent conference that this student has yet to start speaking in Spanish his home language either. During the first few days of school we noticed that this student does not even respond to his name. He was referred to Grantwood AEA where test results showed that this student experiences significant hearing loss. This has helped me realize the importance of teachers in communities. Without my CT being so observant, this student and his family would have dealt with this much longer.
My CT gave me the go ahead to use techniques and strategies to try and make this student's classroom experience more manageable. I created signs for him to communicate with us on his desk. I have also been using my I pad to show him images of what is expected - like drawing a picture of his family.

I love that you're putting in extra work with your ELL student. Your effort and caring for him definitely means a lot to him. Using pictures was a great idea to have a visual for him so that he can keep working in the class. You're doing awesome and keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteIt is awesome that your CT gave you the go ahead to use techniques and strategies on your own. Great expirence!
ReplyDeleteI love that you and your CT were able to see the need for this student and that you are able to work on getting the accommodations that are needed for him in the classroom!
ReplyDeleteThis sharing gave me chills down my spiine. This child was so lucky to be placed in this classroom where he was noticed. Thank you for making a difference and addressing the needs for him. Hopefully, the child will continue to receive the support he needs and the classroom will offer the best learning for him.
